Belhus Cricket Club
was established in 1960 as a result of the merger
between
Belhus
Park CC
and
Belhus
Association CC. The former played its home matches,
as the
name suggests,
at
Belhus
Park (which it shared with Aveley CC, a club and
whose roots dated back to the eighteenth century)
that had been landscaped by Lancelot ‘Capability’
Brown and was home to
the
Belhus
mansion, one of the
great Country homes of the era.
The name
'Belhus'
derived its name from the
owner of the house in
the 14th century, Nicholas de
Belhus,
who was believed to be of Norman ancestry.
Queen Elizabeth I visited
the Mansion in 1588 and her
carriage probably crossed over
what was to become
the cricket square.
Belhus Cricket Club at North
Stifford Village Green
With an age-old ambition to
own our own ground and have the opportunity
to provide better facilities for members, we moved
from
Belhus
Park to the present
ground on North Stifford village green in 1997 and
finalised negotiations for security of tenure in
2004. This development was undoubtedly the most
significant in our history and with ambitious plans
to improve the clubhouse and other facilities, we
are busy with efforts to raise funds and develop new
partnerships to achieve our objectives.
