THE
VILLAGE GHOST – by the Local Yokel
|
 |
The
apparition floats across from church
yard dark, towards Well Lane,
And when
its ghostly journey’s done, it plodeth
off back home again –
to haunt
the pretty cottage thatched, for ‘twas
from there the soul dispatched.
The
cottage window must be left ajar to let
the spirit through.
Legend do
say “If it be shut that ‘phantom being’
moans at you.
Disturbing presence fills the air, in
the small room above the stair.”
Well,
wouldn’t you, if you were dead, and
stuck somewhere in time and space,
Get mean
and grumpy if denied free passage to
your haunting place?
What does
it seek? Perhaps it has a yearning to
past life regain,
Who is
this soul destined to roam across High
Road and back again?
There’s
many things we do not know, and many
things we cannot see,
There’s
country yarns, and folklore tales,
Believe
them? Well, that’s up to thee.
